Job Description The position is full-time with a small subsistence stipend (3000RMB) and requires a minimum commitment of 3 months. The Beijing office expects interns to possess the abilities to fulfill the responsibilities listed below and flexibility to assist with a variety of tasks based on the needs of the office at the time of the internship.
Responsibilities
• Undertake research and draft background materials on the role of China in conflict issues in the region and around the world;
• Contribute to preparing Crisis Group reports for publication by gathering information, fact-checking, and drafting material;
• Review the Chinese and Western press and conduct Chinese-language research incorporating not only Chinese media but also analysis pieces, journal articles and monographs;
• Attend meetings in Beijing with government officials, diplomats, international organizations, academic institutes, think-tanks, and NGOs, as requested;
• Provide limited administrative assistance to Crisis Group staff.
Requirements:
• Undergraduate degree in international relations, political science, conflict studies, public policy, or Asia studies (or a related subject), with a preference for those with a postgraduate degree;
• Excellent verbal and written command of English;
• Professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese, with the ability to quickly and accurately conduct Chinese-language research (a language assessment will be required for short-listed applicants), proven knowledge of other relevant languages (Russian, Korean, Japanese) is helpful but not required;
• Proven research skills in political analysis or international relations;
• Good understanding of Chinese foreign policy, particularly relating to conflict areas in the region and around the world;
• Strong writing and editing skills;
• Highly organized and able to pay close attention to detail;
